This tool offers a mechanics simulation of the hookset “theories” that anglers pass around as fact. Change the conditions and see for yourself whether the popular theories hold up — I built it hoping it would help with exactly that, and that it might move hookset mechanics a step closer to a real theory. You can save your conditions and comment on them, including any theory that follows from the assumptions, so please make use of it. Requests for the simulator are welcome too.

It computes how the line tension (the force on the hook point) builds up over time when you sweep the rod at angular velocity ω. The model includes the rod's large bend and its own mass (recoil), line stretch, slack, the fish's inertia and water resistance, the drag and the limit of the angler's arm torque. Move any condition on the left and every chart updates. A real hookset is not only a rotation about one pivot — anglers also pull the rod back and lift the pivot — but this simulation covers rotation about a single pivot only.

  • The rod tip moves at right angles to the rod, so only sin φ of its motion pulls the line. If you start the sweep with the rod pointing at the fish (φ ≈ 0), it hardly pulls the line at first.
  • The rod is one beam whose bending stiffness changes continuously from butt to tip, and its large-deflection equilibrium (the elastica) is solved. As the rod bends deeply the tip turns toward the line, so the same tension makes it give less and less (a soft tip “loads” first, then the butt takes over). The larger the ratio of butt EI₀ to tip EI₁, and the shorter the bend section a, the more the bend concentrates at the tip — a faster action.
  • The rod's motion is represented by its first vibration mode. The part of the rod's mass that the tip has to move (the effective tip mass m_e) bends the rod as the sweep accelerates and makes it spring back when the sweep stops. The natural frequency is an estimate from the deflected shape under a small load at right angles to the tip. Higher modes, the mass of the guides and grip, and air drag are not included.
  • The damping ratio ζ applies to the vibration of rod tip, line and fish connected together. It lumps together the rod material's damping, absorption by the hand and arm, the line material's damping and the drag on the line in water. Flicked in the air, a rod has a damping ratio of only about 0.01–0.05, but held in the hand with a fish on it should be much higher, so the default is 0.15 (not based on measurements). A smaller value leaves the ripples in the tension after the sweep for longer.
  • The arm is approximated by a linear force–velocity relation (the higher the torque, the slower the swing) and a maximum angular acceleration. The torque on the arm is the force on the rod (tension plus the rod's inertia) × lever arm r. As the rod bends its tip gives toward the line, so with the rod up (φ ≤ about 90°) r gets shorter and the load on the arm lighter. Beyond 90° the bending concentrates near the tip; above 165°, beyond the table, the 165° values are used. Hook rotation and the stages of resistance as the point goes in are not included.
  • Blank materials can be chosen from the carbon and glass fibers whose properties (tensile modulus, tensile strength, elongation at break, density) fiber makers publish. The values are typical strand-test values; for the blank, the effective modulus is taken as 0.5× the fiber's and the density as 60% fiber and 40% resin. For the same bending stiffness a higher-modulus material makes a thinner, lighter rod that recovers faster, but its breaking strain (strength ÷ modulus) is lower. The breaking guide is 60% of the fiber's breaking strain, allowing for the compression side of the bend and the crushing of a tube; it does not guarantee the strength of a real rod (scratches, joints, guide positions, resin, layup and so on). Ratings such as “24t” and “40t” used for fishing rods are the tensile modulus in tonf/mm²; 1t ≈ 9.8 GPa.
  • Material sources: Toray Composite Materials America, Carbon Fiber Selector Guide, Toray T1100G and M40X, Toray's M46X announcement (M46X figures estimated from a secondary source), Mitsubishi Chemical Pyrofil typical properties, JPS Composite Materials (E- and S-glass).
  • The line runs from the rod tip (1 + 0.5L m above the water) to the fish at the given depth; the sag from its own weight is worked out separately for the parts in air and in water. The underwater sag meets water drag as it is taken up, so it does not straighten at once (the drag that moves the sag is passed on as tension). Friction along the line and sideways sag from current are not included (the latter is stood in for by “slack from wind and current”). Slack is treated as sag that is pulled out as the tension rises, so there is no sudden shock when the line comes tight. The line material's damping is approximated with typical loss factors: small for PE, larger for nylon and fluoro.
  • 1.2m is the fish's effective mass including the added mass of water. The calculation uses a semi-implicit Euler method with 50 μs steps and runs for at least 1 second — until 0.25 s after the rod reaches the sweep angle, or up to 2 seconds if it never does (the tension charts show the first second).
  • Version 2.0 changed the rod model (before that: two sections, butt and tip, small deflections and no mass). The EI values of conditions saved before then mean something different in the new model, so their results change.
